Last weekend was National Coming Out Day. My friend Gary- and I am so proud to call him “my friend,” because he is now, and has always been, such an amazing, stellar human being – posted the following on Facebook:
I know the difference between right and wrong. As an effeminate, gay boy growing up in a Northern NJ town, in the 70’s and 80’s it was literally beaten into me. I somehow knew that the emotional and physical torture that my peers put me through was “wrong” and that my kind, compassionate, creative and genuine existence was “right,” regardless of what they were constantly pummeling into me. Long ago, I came to peace with the fact that my childhood bullies were my oppressors. What I didn’t realize, until recently, is that some of my childhood friends and classmates still are….
