ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE

While they’ve met before, today Joe Biden met with Vladimir Putin for the first time since Biden became President of the United States.  There weren’t a lot of high bars set for this meeting.  Not much concrete was expected to be achieved. 

But the significance of this meeting – initiated by the Biden Administration and set in historically neutral Geneva Switzerland – cannot be understated. The fact that this meeting was a punctuation on a trip that began with the G7 Leaders and followed by a NATO Summit wasn’t so that Biden could save some money on airfare.  It was a trip filled with strategic stepping stones. …

JUNETEENTH REMBRANCE and ACTION

Today, 48 states and Washington, D.C., recognize Juneteenth as either a state holiday or ceremonial holiday. Hawaii passed legislation on April 27 to recognize the holiday, but it is unclear whether Hawaii’s governor signed the bill into law. South Dakota still has not recognized the holiday.  But that may not matter, because yesterday, the Senate unanimously passed a bill to make Juneteenth a National Holiday. …

To paraphrase the perennial Bill Murray favorite, “Well, it’s Gun Control.  Again.”  It was barely a week ago when a gunman drove all over Atlanta, Georgia, killing 8 people – mostly women, mostly Asians, in massage parlors.  And then yesterday, a man whose own family stated they believe he is mentally unstable, killed ten people who were shopping in their neighborhood grocery store in Boulder, Colorado. …
